• Place Value Game
Skill Application: Place Value
Object: To be able to read a number with at least 4 digits
Materials:
- A strip of heavy paper that has been divided into sections to represent place value. (The number of sections will depend on the size of the numbers you want the student to practice. For example, if you want the student to practice reading numbers to the thousands place, the strip would have 4 sections.)
- Dice to represent a number for each section. (You would need 4 dice to practice numbers to the thousands place, 3 dice to practice numbers to the hundreds place, etc.)
To Play:
- The student rolls all of the dice at the same time.
- The student then places one die in each strip section. (It doesn’t matter which number goes where.)
- After placing all of the dice, the student reads the number.
Variation 1: If the student is practicing reading numbers to the thousands place and you want the student to practice reading numbers with zero in them, take one (or more) dice away. Tell the student that one number must go in the thousands place but the other numbers can be placed anywhere he/she wants. The space(s) without a number stands for “zero”.
Variation 2: To practice taking 10, 200, etc. away, have the student find the tens place or one hundreds place, etc. and have him/her actually manipulate the dice by taking one away, or two away, etc. Then have the student read the new number.
