• Cross The Line
Skill Application: Initial blends (Contractions sh, ch, st, th, wh)
Object: To be the person with the fewest chips on his/her side of the line when all the cards have been read.
Materials:
- A folder (A dark black line can be drawn down the center for low vision students. The crease that is already in the folder provides a tactile line for blind students.)
- Tokens: buttons, poker chips, etc. (5 for each player)
- Word cards – some beginning with the blend that needs practice, others without blends. Each player places 5 tokens on his/her side of the line.
To Play:
- Each player takes a turn reading a word card from the “draw” pile.
- If the word starts with ch, for example, the child must read the word correctly and tell which letters make the “ch” sound.
- If the word is a “ch” word, then the player who read the “ch” word pushes one of his/her tokens across the line to the other player.
- If the word is not a “ch” word, no tokens are moved.
- Players continue drawing cards until the draw pile is empty.
The person with the fewest tokens on his/her side wins.
